The land that surrounds the bog has also evolved, though not always through its own natural processes. Once mixed forest of hardwood and conifer, it was logged relentlessly in the early 1900s, and the timber of the north woods was sent south and east and even west to build the new cities of America. As with much of the land in the upper Midwest, the once-shaded acreage surrounding Mud Lake and its swamps was left open to the stare of the sun.

The maple and similar species of the early forests did not seed well in bright light, and the seedlings that were not trampled by the loggers and their horses and wagons and sleds curled into themselves and died. But aspen and birch saplings like the sun, and happily filled the air with their lithe stems and light green leaves.
